Update: added the uncropped picture with glorious I6 cylinder heads.
Holy moly fragoly. Apparently, that’s Mazda’s new inline 6 with what looks like some sort of mild hybrid system, and a looong transmission reaching waaaay back. This can only mean one thing. Mazda has a RWD I6 car in the works. And there looks to be a transfer case on the end that would throw power to the front for an AWD option. Could that be a Mazda6? Seems plausible. That’s shaping up to be a more affordable BMW! Maybe even with a manual...

V ery interesting - NA I6 with an electric kicker rather than a turbo 4 like everybody else is doing. “If I can’t put a rotary in it then, goshdarnit, in line naturally aspirated 6 with a hybrid!”

Another rumor is that this drivetrain will also be heading to the *next* Lexus IS, which, since the current one just got a second facelift and Toyota generally updates its cars on geologic time, will probably be somewhere around the end of this decade if we’re lucky.

An inline six with 4 intake runners?

Well, it may still have a turbo, though Mazda seems to be pretty reserved, and not turboing everything. Mercedes and BMW are doing mild hybrid setups on their turbo I6's. I’d honestly love it if Mazda went NA with this. As a fan of old BMW’s this is hitting all my buttons: rwd, no boost, inline 6, practical, hopefully manual.

Yea, good catch, the sixes are on the sides I think , and the center one is a 4, but that trans still indicates a RWD layout

right - kidding aside, a beefy, torquey NA inline six would be totally sexy and potentially sound like angels from heaven

Isn't the six supposed to be NA?

So the hybrid thing with the trans on it sure looks like a 4cyl to me. If you follow the link in your article to the mazda source PDF, that image is cropped from Mazda’s source, which appears to show an i6 head on either end to the outside, they are subtly different, perhaps one is a standard gasoline head, one diesel ( or skyactiv-x) its hard to tell w ith all the plumbing, possibly development plumbing, but I think the engines on either side are the i6s, with a hybrid 4cyl in the middle (i can only count 4 runners on that one).

I can’t help feeling like I read about electric turbo/superchargers somewhere... Garret t maybe? And it could be used somehow in conjunction with a hybrid setup to help pump combustion power back into electric somehow... Can’t recall. Seems to strike a chord with my brain.

I think it'll be a skyactiv x, so lightly supercharged.

If they keep car weight down, Id like a bit smaller, revvy inline 6. Make it a proper sports car.

That’s a 4 popper with a 48V mild hybrid setup connected to an automatic transmission. And with most things Mazda, I’ll believe it when I see it.

The one on the far left with the clutch on the back of it. MMM.

Plot twist, tiny V8

Mazda will do this but won’t made a Mazdaspeed 3, which should be an easy parts bin special.
Anyway, I hope the new RWD 6 hatchback will be available as a wagon and hatchback, and that an I4 will be available. Mazda fucked up with the 6 wagon by making it V6-only in the US because Ford was jealous and didn’t want to steal sales from the Escape/Tribute.
This new
RWD I6 will rust before it actually goes on sale lol

It’s going to be a mid engine, front wheel drive.
